Granville Gardens is a resident-run housing cooperative of 94 homes built on mutual support, shared responsibility, and the belief that neighbours make a community.
Founded in 1982, Granville Gardens is a housing cooperative — meaning the residents own and govern the community together. There are no profit-driven landlords here. Members vote on the annual budget, elect the Board of Directors, and take shared responsibility for the place they call home.
Residents enjoy a range of amenities maintained and governed by the community together.
In a housing co‑op, the people who live in the homes are also the members who own and run the organization. No landlords, no profit motive — just neighbours caring for neighbours.
There are many kinds of co‑operatives — food co‑ops, credit unions, worker co‑ops, and more. Any group of people can form a co‑operative to meet a shared need. In a housing co‑op, that shared need is housing.
Members collectively own the cooperative — not a landlord or investor. The coop exists to serve its members, not to generate profit for outside owners.
Decisions are made collectively. Members elect a Board of Directors from within the community, and every member gets a vote on major decisions like the annual budget.
As long as you follow the co‑op's bylaws and pay your housing charges, you have the right to remain in your home. There's no arbitrary eviction by a landlord.
Members look after their community together — from maintaining common spaces to participating in meetings and committees. Cooperation is part of the deal.
Housing co‑operatives have been part of Canadian communities for nearly a century. Over the decades, federal and provincial governments have supported the development of non‑profit housing co‑operatives across the country, creating well-managed, good‑quality, affordable housing.
Granville Gardens has been part of Richmond's fabric since 1982 — over 40 years of community-led living in the heart of Metro Vancouver.
